Duncan McKenzie Trophy
The Duncan McKenzie Trophy has a long history, being donated following the death of Duncan in April 1961 while driving a Cooper in a Formula Libre and Sports Car race at a motorsport meeting in Levin. While competing in a race with other legends of the day, Chris Amon and Graeme Lawrence, Duncan was unfortunate to spin out on the very first lap of race, crashed into a ditch, the car flipped and he was fatally injured. This fatality was the only such tragedy to occur at the Levin circuit up until its demise in 1975.
The first winner of the trophy, originally donated as a hill climb trophy for the Wellington Car Club, was a youthful Dick Butters (still competing, now in a Subaru) but sadly his name does not appear on the cup!
